The best cars by breakdowns

Shoppers have several things in mind when buying a new car, from the car’s performance (e.g. responsiveness and fuel economy) to its comfort and attractiveness. Reliability, or how likely the car is to have a breakdown, can’t be ignored when shopping around.

New cars are covered under manufacturer’s bumper-to-bumper warranties that pay the costs of mechanical breakdowns for the first three years. After that, aftermarket warranty for cars are available to cover necessary repairs no longer under warranty.

J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is helpful when making a decision on a new car. Based on the results from the study, here are 9 of the most reliable cars out on the road today.

What is the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study?

The J.D. Power Dependability annual study has been around for 31 years and every year it measures the mechanical breakdowns that cars have experienced over the previous 12 months.

To be eligible for the study, the car must still belong to the original owner and the car must be three years old (most cars begin to experience problems after the three year mark of ownership, or exactly after the manufacturer’s warranty ends). The study covers 177 specific mechanical problems. Thirty-two different car brands were part of the 2020 study.
