What’s the worst time to drive this Labor Day weekend?

traffic jam

The three-day weekend will get many people out of the house and hitting the road to enjoy the last days of summer..

A great companion for any road trip is a vehicle service contract (also known as an extended car warranty) that offers road trip protection and 24-hour roadside assistance while covering sudden repairs.

Here are some driving times to avoid if you’re leaving town this Labor Day holiday.

Worst times to drive on Labor Day: Friday

From the afternoon (12:30 p.m.) into the early evening (around 8 p.m.), you can expect to see a lot of traffic, which is not a great way to start your trip. On the road, there will be a mix of people leaving work and people heading out of town that will create plenty of delays.

Best time to go: If you can, drive later on, after 8:30 p.m.

Worst times to drive on Labor Day Saturday

Since most people will have to work on Friday, they’ll choose to get a good night’s rest and drive out on Saturday. Many people will also want to avoid Friday’s traffic. For this reason, Saturday’s traffic may be even worse, especially between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Best time to go: If you choose to drive on Saturday, do your best to get up early and hit the road early, ideally before 10:00 a.m.

Worst times to drive on Labor Day Sunday

Sunday will be similar to Saturday in that the worst time to drive will be between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The traffic may be a bit lighter due to Sunday services and family get-togethers but it’s best to choose an earlier or a later time to drive.

Best time to go: If possible, hit the road sometime before 10:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m.

Worst times to drive on Labor Day Monday

Monday is when most people will be heading back home after the holiday. There will be plenty of traffic on highways, which means a high likelihood of accidents. Avoid driving anytime between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Best time to go: The earlier you wake up to drive back home, the better. If you have a more flexible schedule, you can drive back Tuesday when traffic will be even less.
